Bolsover Secondary School

About The Project:

The Bolsover School is a specialist Business and Enterprise Secondary School based in Derbyshire. Catering for 11-16 year olds it prides itself on being a centre of academic excellence providing a caring environment where challenge and support, achievement and encouragement, go hand in hand.

The entrance elevation is designed to create a sense of arrival and purpose. The huge, solid, anthracite bookend on the left commemorates Bolsover’s Coal Mining heritage and the ancient values on which the community is built.

The transparent glazed wall on the right holds a statement of the school’s values and encourages entry and exploration. The burnt orange soffit rises out of the ground on the right of the elevation, flies along the underside of the roof and turns into the building, forming a canopy to the cloistered courtyard and leading the visitor into the site.

This project was a brand new build under the ‘Building Schools for the Future’ (BSF) scheme.

This large two-storey, high-tech, and energy efficient building consists of a number of teaching rooms, science laboratories, technology rooms, drama suites, a dance studio, complete with stage lighting, an IT room, canteen and dining area. There is also external flood lighting to the sports pitches.
